Scope and Content Canongate Manse, Reid's Court, Canongate, Edinburgh Reid's Court, marked on old maps as 'Reid's Coach Yard', was built about 1690 and named after a family of coachmakers in the 18th century. The Manse, originally built in the first half of the 18th century as a coaching inn, has 'more the appearance of a farm-house than a town mansion'. This view from the south shows the entrance to Reid's Court. The Canongate was the starting point of one of the first regular stagecoaches to London. In 1754 a stagecoach to London took eight days for the journey. Scotland Yard, London, was so called as this was the terminus for the coaches from Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
