Scope and Content Pier, Amhuinnsuidhe, Harris, Inverness-shire It is likely that this pier was built in connection with the construction of Fincastle, a large house built for the Earl of Dunmore in 1864-7. It is a simple structure, made of massive rubble blocks. This view shows the pier from the north east, illustrating its massive construction. In 1976 it was being used by boats fishing for lobsters using pots, some of which can be seen on the pier. The building of a country house in an area as remote as west Harris in the 1860s could only be accomplished by bringing in most of the materials by sea, the likely reason for building this pier. There is a range of cottages and stores at the pier head. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
