Scope and Content Royal Hotel, Princes Street, Edinburgh Old and new buildings Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, reconstruction continued to transform the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. The new hotel building, a good example of 1950s architecture, was designed by Tarbolton and Ochterlony in 1955. The tall modern block has green slate oriel windows and a recessed upper storey. The original Victorian hotel (right), dates from 1876. In 1954 the Princes Street Panel was set up to regulate the redevelopment of Princes Street, whose north side was expected to be rebuilt from end to end. The plan included first-floor balconies that would eventually link up to form a continuous walkway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
