Scope and Content Late 19th century sketch of Jenners department store, No 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Jenners, on the corner of St David Street, was designed by Sir William Hamilton Beattie in 1893-5. This enormous pink stone building with Renaissance undertones, was, at the time of opening, one of the biggest department stores in Britain. This impressive six-storeyed building has lots of interesting detail and a great deal of strapwork. The corner, copied from the Bodleian Library, Oxford, rises skyward into an octagon with flying buttresses. Jenners, said to be the largest privately owned department store in the world, is often referred to as the 'Harrods of Edinburgh'. It is the last carriage-trade survivor in Princes Street.
