Scope and Content Scottish National Portrait Gallery, No 1 Queen Street, Edinburgh Late 19th century drawing The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, designed by Rowand Anderson for the joint use of the Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Antiquities, was built in 1885-90 for £50,000, a gift to the nation by J R Findlay, owner of the Scotsman newspaper. The building, built of red Dumfriesshire sandstone, resembles the Doge's Palace in Venice. The upper storey is almost windowless, but the façade has wide Gothic windows on the ground floor. The central doorway in Queen Street is decorated with figures. The site of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street had been left vacant until 1797 to provide the original residents on the north side of St Andrew Square with an uninterrupted view over to the Firth of Forth and the hills of Fife.
