Scope and Content Nos 25-27, on the north side of St Andrew Square, Edinburgh St Andrew Square, the eastern square of James Craig's New Town, was built speculatively in the 1770s and does not have the unified design of Charlotte Square. It began as a fashionable residential area and is now a square of banks and insurance offices. The two townhouses on the left were built by Sir William Chambers c.1770. The house in the centre has its original rubble walling but the porch, pediments and balustrade were added later in 1840. In 1770-2 Sir William Chambers designed the four houses in the centre of the north side of the square. All were rubble-built, and had three-storeyed, five-bay fronts. The only difference was in the position of the doorpieces. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
