Scope and Content Early 19th-century engraving of St Bernard's Bridge over the Water of Leith at Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith, has more of the character of a small town than a suburb, although quite transformed by first, Georgian, and later, Victorian development, from the pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas. This small bridge was built, possibly by James Milne, with one arch spanning the Water of Leith, and another smaller land-arch allowing access to a riverside walk. The bridge has iron railings instead of a solid parapet. St Bernard's Bridge was built in 1824 to allow easy access from India Place and Royal Circus to the new Georgian housing development on Sir Henry Raeburn's Stockbridge estate. About 200m downstream is the Stock Bridge, built earlier in 1786. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
