Scope and Content Early 19th-century sketch of Ainslie Place, Edinburgh Ainslie Place, a graceful wooded oval built almost at the north-west corner of Charlotte Square, is part of James Gillespie Graham's self-contained and imaginative housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate. Begun in 1822, it was completed by 1826. Compared to Moray Place with which it connects, Ainslie Place is only moderately grand. It consists of two elegant symmetrical crescents, each with a Doric pilastered centrepiece, built facing each other across mature wooded gardens. The architect, James Gillespie Graham, wanted something 'completely different from the monotony of the present streets and squares', when he designed a new development on the Earl of Moray's estate, cleverly linking with the first and northern New Towns.
