Scope and Content View of the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh The Royal Scottish Academy was built in 1822 by the architect William Playfair. It was subsequently enlarged, by the same architect, to provide the building that still stands at this spot today. This view is taken looking down Hanover Street to the Old Town. The contrast between the open elegance of the New Town and the dark cramped Old Town is clearly seen. In this illustration the New Town is clearly thriving, but that was not always so. At first visitors to Edinburgh described it as elegant but deserted, but it soon became more popular. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
