Scope and Content View of North Bridge and Calton Hill, Edinburgh In the late 18th century the Nor' Loch, which lay between the Old and New Towns, was drained and North Bridge was built to span the gap. The bridge was remodelled in the late 19th century, but remains recognisable today. Behind the Bridge on Calton Hill lies the old Calton Gaol. Most of this building is now demolished. All that remains is the castellated round Governor's House, which stands out to the right. On Calton Hill may be seen the City Observatory which had recently been remodelled. Nelson's Monument is recognisable as an upturned telescope, and behind it stands scaffolding around the site of the National Monument, which was never completed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
