Scope and Content View of the old Jail Governor's House, Regent Road, Edinburgh This round castellated building is all that remains of the Old Calton Gaol. The Gaol itself was demolished in the 20th century to make way for the building of Old St Andrew's House. In the background North Bridge may be seen. This was built in the late 18th century to span the gully between the Old Town and the New. Originally the Nor' Loch lay between the two, but this was drained. The Bridge was built by William Mylne, member of a well-known family of architects. In 1768 five people were killed and others injured when one of the abutments collapsed, but it was ready to be opened to traffic in 1772, though not quite finished.
