Scope and Content View of the Canongate, Edinburgh The Canongate was originally a separate burgh outside the walls of the City of Edinburgh. It had its own administration with a Tolbooth, churches and so on. As the name implies it was connected to the Canons of Holyrood Abbey. This illustration gives a good idea of the bustle of life as elegant townsfolk jostle with street urchins, soldiers and workers. Wagons laden with goods make their way down the street which may be seen to be lit with early gas lighting. The Canongate was less densely populated than the Old Town. It was originally a prosperous burgh and had many fine buildings. As its fortunes fluctuated so it became more cramped and squalid. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
