Scope and Content 19th-century view of St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been a central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. St Giles, dating from c.1130, was mainly destroyed by the English in 1385. The bulk of the existing church today is 15th century but the Gothic exterior is the result of an 'improvement' by William Burn in 1829 when the original stonework was refaced. In the Middle Ages, St Giles was the only parish church in the burgh of Edinburgh, shown by its vast size and position mid-way down High Street. The first church on the site was probably built just after the founding of the burgh c.1130. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
