Scope and Content View of Edinburgh from Craigleith Craigleith is well-known today as a busy shopping centre, but it has not always been so. For many centuries it was the heart of a huge quarry that supplied much of the stone from which Edinburgh, especially the New Town, was built. There is little evidence of the industrial quarry in this rural scene, but much of the city skyline is still recognisable. On the left lies Calton Hill with the two monuments. Next come St Andrew's Square and the spire of St Andrew's Church. Arthur's Seat lies in the background, with the Old Town below and the spires of the Tron Kirk and St Giles. To the right stands the Castle, with the dome of West Register House (originally St George's Church) and the spires of St John's and St Cuthbert's. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
