Scope and Content The Exchange Buildings, Leith, Edinburgh The Exchange Buildings were built in the late 18th century, at which time business was flourishing in the Port of Leith. They were designed on a grand scale by the architect Thomas Brown and cost £16,000. The Exchange Buildings were designed to serve various purposes. They provided a meeting place and business offices for the local merchants, and there was also a coffee-room and a bar. In addition, there were reading rooms and an assembly room. The Exchange Buildings are known today as the Old Assembly Rooms and they are still used for public gatherings among other things. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
