Scope and Content Early 18th-century view of St Bernard's Well on the south bank of the Water of Leith at Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith, has more of the character of a small town than a suburb, although the pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas was quite transformed by later development. This circular Roman-style temple, with ten Doric columns, dates from 1789. It was built over a mineral spring discovered in the 1760s and regarded at the time as having powerful healing properties. St Bernard's Well became a popular place for visitors to 'take the waters'. At the height of the season there was such a 'demand for lodgings' that 'there was not so much as one room to be had either at the Water of Leith or its neighbourhood'.
