Scope and Content St Anthony's Chapel, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh St Anthony's Chapel has always been popular, as this illustration shows. Today it is a less romantic place as the sheep have gone and the ruins have been tidied and consolidated. The east end no longer stands though the west end remains much as shown. The chapel is thought to have been built in the latter half of the 15th century, and it was out of use by the late 16th century. Traditionally it has been associated with a hermitage, though there is little evidence of this. The view from the chapel over the city of Edinburgh is particularly striking. In the distance the Castle may be seen on Castle Hill. Calton Hill and the Nelson Monument stand nearer, and Leith lies off to the north, with the Forth beyond. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
