Scope and Content North Bridge, Edinburgh The North Bridge was built to span the gully between the Old Town and the eastern end of the New Town. Originally this area lay under water, the Nor' Loch, but this was drained in 1762, and the foundation of the bridge was laid shortly after. The Bridge was built by William Mylne, member of a well-known family of architects. In 1768, five people were killed and others injured when one of the abutments collapsed, but it was ready to be opened to traffic in 1772, though not quite finished. Work on the bridge involved the levelling of the Old Town close where it joined the Royal Mile and the inhabitants were thus re-housed. In the late 19th century the Waverley Railway Station was built under the Bridge, which was itself rebuilt in 1896-7. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
