Scope and Content Holyrood Palace and St Ann's Yards, Edinburgh This 19th-century drawing shows the familiar view of Holyrood Palace with the ruins of the Abbey church to one side. A small flock of sheep and some cattle in the foreground attest to the importance of farming in the Park at the time. To the left of the Palace, however, stands a group of buildings on the site of the present Palace car park. This is the site of St Ann's Yards, tenements which, in the 19th century, housed those who came into the Park as debtors. Holyrood Park was an important Debtor's Sanctuary from the mid-16th century into the late 19th century. At the time of this illustration there were over 100 people living there, under strict rules imposed by the Abbey Court. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
