Scope and Content Early 19th-century view of St Stephen's Church, seen from Howe Street, Edinburgh Howe Street was a 'route of communication' for the northern New Town from Queen Street, and the main road to the village of Stockbridge. Feuing started around 1807, and building consisted almost entirely of handsome tenements, which step down the hill. The view from Howe Street, looking to the north over open countryside stretching to the Firth of Forth, was blocked by the massive structure of St Stephen's Church. Great King Street (right) was the grand central thoroughfare of the northern New Town. St Stephen's Church, which terminates the view at the end of Howe Street, was designed by Playfair and completed in 1828. Described as 'of vast scale, Baroque power and Grecian severity', it is square in plan and set diagonally to suit the site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
