Scope and Content View of Edinburgh's New Town from the north-west This view shows many of the features of Edinburgh that may still be recognised today. The New Town was newly-built, and indeed much building work was still going on. Edinburgh had expanded rapidly, but, as may be seen, ploughed fields still lay close by. To the left lies the tower of the newly-built St Stephens Church, and in the background Calton Hill with the National Monument and Nelson's Monument. To the right lies Arthur's Seat and the spire of the Tron Kirk, recently rebuilt after the fire of 1824. Edinburgh's New Town was started in the mid-18th century in response to the cramped conditions for both dwellings and commerce in the Old Town. At first visitors to Edinburgh described it as elegant but deserted, but it soon became more popular. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
