Scope and Content Trinity House, Leith, Edinburgh Trinity House was built in Leith in 1816 as a charitable foundation for merchant seamen. It included a hospital and stood on the site of the old Trinity Hospital, which was demolished to make way for the new building. Trinity House was designed in the contemporary Neo-Classical style, and the architect was Thomas Brown. He incorporated into the building three carved stones from the original hospital. One, bearing the date 1555, is the oldest carved stone in Leith. The sea has always been very important to Leith. The wealth of the town was founded on the shipping trade and so it was not unusual to find provision being made, from early on, for the welfare of those who had worked at sea.
