Scope and Content Inveraray Pier, Argyll This pier was built as part of the development of the new town of Inveraray by the Duke of Argyll, and subsequently extended to form a long L-plan structure. A timber piled extension was added in 1877 to accommodate the large steamer 'Lord of the Isles'. This view shows the masonry pier, with small boats moored beside it. The top of the timber-piled extension can be seen above the group of boats. The pier continued to handle excursion traffic until the 1973 season. In recent years it has been the berth for a floating maritime museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
