Leverburgh View of school

Description Leverburgh View of school

Date 24/4/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 461623

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content School, Leverburgh, Harris, Inverness-shire This school was built to serve the model village of Leverburgh, constructed by Lord Leverhulme in an attempt to modernise the economy of Lewis and Harris. The expected transformation did not materialise, but the village remains. This view shows the simple modern construction of the building. Leverhulme made his fortune in Lever Brothers, soap and edible oil manufacturers. He was a philanthropist, with a belief that he could apply his fortune and business ability to improve the lot of the people of the Outer Isles. He proved overoptimistic.
