Description Voe, Jetty View looking NNE showing railway track on jetty

Date 6/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 461579

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Pier, Voe, Shetland This is a small rubble pier with a cattle-loading ramp down the east side, and with a timber-piled extension. A tramway ran along the wooden deck of the extension, with a trolley to carry fish landed at the pier. This view shows the tramway on the wooden extension. It is laid with bullhead main-line railway rail set on its side, with the trolley wheels running in the grooves so formed. The extension of the pier was designed to allow deeper-draughted vessels to berth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
