Scope and Content Horizontal corn mills, Huxter, Shetland This was in 1976 the best-preserved group of horizontal mills in Shetland There were three mills, the bottom one intact, and the other two roofless, but retaining their stones and waterwheels (tirls). Since 1976 the top mills have been re-roofed. This view shows the interior of the underhouse of the top mill, with the waterwheel or tirl with its angled paddles. This tirl has a concrete centre. The chute which directed water on to the paddles can be seen behind the wheel. Mills of this type were common in the 19th century, using the small streams all over the island system, The small horizontal wheel drove the top stone of the mill directly.
