Scope and Content Dickson's Close, High Street, Edinburgh Dickson's Close is apparently named after John Dickson who lived here with his son Thomas in the mid-18th century. It has had many other names such as Aikman's Close and Bruce's Close. Today the Close has long been demolished, but the name may still be seen incorporated into the wall above an entrance to the modern hotel. Records show much detail of the occupants in 1773: on the first floor was a fishmonger; on the second, a lodging house; third, the home of the Dowager Countess of Balcarres; fourth, a gentle lady; fifth, dressmakers; sixth, tailors and other tradesmen.
