Scope and Content The Tron Church, High Street, Edinburgh The Tron Kirk (Church) was founded in 1633 to house the overflow from St Giles. The original kirk was altered when South Bridge was built in the late 18th century and the tower was destroyed by fire in 1824. After this a grander steeple was built in 1829. The Kirk was closed in 1952 and the interior has been gutted, though many fine details of the building still survive. In the 1970s excavations in the interior revealed detail of Marlin's Wynd, the Old Town street over which the Kirk was built. Though the city buildings have often destroyed much information about the structures that went before, pockets of information still survive. Archaeological excavation is an important tool to find out about the past life of the city. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
