Scope and Content The head of West Bow, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh West Bow was originally a precipitous Z-shaped street leading from the Grassmarket up to the west end of the Lawnmarket. Its course was later interrupted by Victoria Street, and the line of its final ascent up the hill to the north is now marked by steps. This picturesque old tenement stood at the head of the West Bow and the Lawnmarket until 1878 when it was demolished. The house, with irregularly spaced windows, large gables and tall chimneys, dated from the late 16th century. The Lawnmarket or 'Land market', one of the great open spaces within Edinburgh's old city walls, ran from the head of West Bow to the Old Tolbooth at St Giles. Here street traders or 'lawn merchants' sold produce from the land on market day. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
