Scope and Content St Margaret's Chapel, Edinburgh Castle St Margaret's Chapel is the oldest extant building in the Castle complex. It was built in the early 12th century by David I and named after his mother. The chapel has been much altered over the years, but it is thought possible that originally it may have been part of a larger building, perhaps a palace. It went out of use in the 16th century and was replaced by a new chapel. From the 16th century, St Margaret's Chapel was used as a munitions store and much remodelled. It was rediscovered and restored in the 19th century. The interior arch was renewed in the 1850s but it gives an idea of the elegance of the original building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
