Scope and Content Portcullis Gate, Edinburgh Castle The Portcullis Gate, on the main entranceway into Edinburgh Castle, was built in 1577 under Regent Morton. It was then remodelled in the 1880s when a tower was added to the top. The building of the Portcullis Gate was part of a substantial re-fortification of the Castle after the siege of 1573 when the Castle was retaken by the Crown, James VI, from the supporters of the exiled queen Mary Queen of Scots. The work of the 19th century was part of a series of works designed to add glory and splendour to the Castle. Much of this work was done in the supposed styles of the Castle's earlier builders.
