Scope and Content Edinburgh Castle viewed from The Vennel Edinburgh Castle sits high on the Castle Rock above the city. On the right may be seen the Half-Moon Battery, built in the reign of James VI, by Regent Morton after the Castle was besieged in 1573. To the left lie the Royal Apartments. The Vennel runs down into the Grassmarket, once the site of one of Edinburgh's busiest markets and also a place of public execution. Further up The Vennel lie remains of the Flodden Wall, built to enclose the City after the defeat of the Scots in 1513. Edinburgh is well-known for its hills, and the Castle Rock, like many, owes its origin to volcanic activity many millennia ago. Erosion has since worn away the summit of the volcano and the current rock would have lain deep inside its heart. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
