Scope and Content George Street, Edinburgh Assembly Rooms and Music Hall, No 54 The Assembly Rooms, built by public subscription by John Henderson, 1784-7, were the focus of social life in the New Town with regular dancing assemblies. The building was extended by William Burn and David Bryce in 1843 to include a Music Hall. The original building, by Henderson, was described as 'heavy and inelegant' and in 1817-18 the Classical portico, with Doric columns and an arcaded base projecting into the street, was added by William Burn. The practice of holding assemblies or subscription dances began in Edinburgh about 1710. By 1790 there were three assembly rooms: one catered for the Old Town; one served the district of George Square; and the third was in the New Town in George Street.
