Scope and Content George Street, Edinburgh Assembly Rooms, No 54, the salon The Assembly Rooms, built by public subscription by John Henderson, 1784-7, were the focus of social life in the New Town with regular dancing assemblies. The building was extended by William Burn and David Bryce in 1843 to include a Music Hall. The square domed central salon, lined with Doric columns, was reached by twin stair-halls from the entrance-lobby below. The salon led to a magnificent ballroom at the front of the building, and to a tea-room at the rear. In 18th-century grand houses the salon was a standard feature. It was an 'apartment of communication' which led to all the principal apartments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
