Scope and Content George Street, Edinburgh Second-floor plan of the Assembly Rooms, showing the Music Hall The Assembly Rooms, built by public subscription by John Henderson, 1784-7, were the focus of social life in the New Town with regular dancing assemblies. The building was extended by William Burn and David Bryce in 1843 to include a Music Hall. This plan was drawn in 1906 when the side lanes were bridged with pend arches, and long flanking rooms built behind. The Music Hall, at the rear, was built to a Greek-cross plan, with a large platform in the south arm, and a gallery in the north. Late 18th-century Edinburgh society heard the best musicians in Scotland perform works by contemporary composers, especially Handel. The opening of the Assembly Rooms in 1787 allowed concerts to be more conveniently attended by New Town residents. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
