Scope and Content Kirkwall Harbour, Orkney This harbour consists of a long, irregularly-shaped east pier, with a broad head, and an easterly stub, and a shorter west pier. Together they form a basin used by small craft; larger vessels use the east pier. This view shows the end of the east pier, seen from the sea. Note the cast iron harbour light on the pierhead. This has now been relocated to the end of the west pier, as a result of post-1976 works to extend the east pier. Since 1976 extensive works have been carried out to improve the working of the harbour, and vehicular ferries have been introduced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
