Description Dounby, Clapper Bridge View from S showing SSW front

Date 1/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 459575

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Clapper bridge, Millbridge, Dounby, Orkney This is a good example of a very simple type of bridge, where the spans are composed of stone slabs laid across the abutments and piers. In this case there are four spans, with piers, abutments and slabs all of the local flagstone. This view shows the bridge from the downstream side. Note the regular construction of the piers. On the upstream side these have triangular cutwaters. Though simple in concept, this little bridge is remarkably sophisticated in construction. This is one of the best and least altered bridges of its type in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
