Scope and Content Kirkwall Harbour, Orkney This harbour consists of a long, irregularly-shaped east pier, with a broad head, and an easterly stub, and a shorter west pier. Together they form a basin used by small craft; larger vessels use the east pier. This view shows the inner basin, looking towards Shore Street, with part of the east pier on the left. The building on the right, in the background, is the girnel, a 17th century warehouse built for storing rents paid in grain. Since 1976 extensive works have been carried out to improve the working of the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
