Scope and Content Stornoway Power Station, Lewis, Ross and Cromarty This is a large electricity generating station powered by diesel engines, and supplying the islands of Lewis and Harris. It was operated by the North of Scotland Hydro-electric Board. This view shows the station from the side. The chimneys carried away the exhaust gasses from the diesel engines. There were several generating sets, the number in operation depending on the demand for electricity. Diesel generation was necessary here as the islands had no suitable sites for hydro-electric generation, and there were no local supplies of coal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
