Scope and Content Village Store, New Buildings and the Counting House, New Lanark, Lanarkshire The village square was the focal point of the community of New Lanark, and it was natural to site the village store there. The Robert Owen partnership also built a counting house on the end of Caithness Row, partly as an observation post. This view shows the square, with Nursery Buildings (the apprentice house) and the village store on the left, and the bowed front of the Counting House on the right. Caithness Row and the Counting House were refurbished in the late 1960s. Visitors to the Falls of Clyde, a tourist attraction of international importance, generally passed through the square, and Robert Owen and his staff were able to observe and intercept them, and if appropriate show them the mills.
