Scope and Content Village Store, New Buildings, New Lanark, Lanarkshire The village store is a three-storey building with a shop on the ground floor and upper floors which originally served as storage for shop goods, but which were converted into flats by the New Lanark Association in the 1970s. This view shows the store from the north west, with the four bay windows of the shop clearly visible. These were recreated by the Association on the basis of photographic evidence. The single-storey block at the end was originally a slaughterhouse. The store was built to supply the village households with food and drink, and with ironmongery and crockery. Its profits were used to pay for the schooling provided by Robert Owen's partnership in the Institute for the Formation of Character and School. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
