Scope and Content View of dining room from south, Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of Inveraray Castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. French influence can be seen in the tapestry, furniture and carpets installed in the 1780s. The round-headed painted panels reflect the round-headed window frames and the round-headed looking-glass, above the console table. There are circular painted panels within square frames above the doors. Much of this was executed by Irrouard le Girardy. The architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) was responsible for much interior decoration of the castle. He made plans for the complete decoration of the south-west saloon and all the state rooms on the north-east side, including the dining room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
