Scope and Content Charlotte Square, Edinburgh Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the year before he died, is the crowning achievement of his many works of domestic architecture, and one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. Each side of the square was designed as an integral unit. Here Robert Adams' north side (right) with its elegant façade fronted by fine wrought iron railings, lamps and torch extinguishers, meets the west side with Robert Reid's St George's Church (left). Charlotte Square is the 'grand finale' of James Craig's New Town, the last section to be built and the only one designed as a single unified scheme by Robert Adam.
