Scope and Content North side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the year before he died, is the crowning achievement of his many works of domestic architecture, and one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. The houses, three-storeys plus attics and basement, lie behind an elegant façade. The ground floor is of rusticated ashlar, with smooth ashlar above. The front doors have semicircular fanlights above, and wrought-iron railings and lamps in front. On the north side, No 6 is the official residence of the Secretary of State for Scotland (now the First Minister). No 7, the 'Georgian House', owned by the National Trust for Scotland, is furnished in the style of the period in which the house was built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
