Scope and Content 19th century view of St Andrew's Church, (now St Andrew and St George), George Street, Edinburgh St Andrew's Church was built in George Street in 1782-4 following the loss of its intended site in St Andrew Square. This shallow space suited the oval, or strictly elliptical, church of which this seems to be the first important example in Britain. The church, with its pedimented Corinthian portico, and slender tower and spire, interrupts a row of rather plain three-storeyed houses. St Andrew Square, in the background, is dominated by the monument to Lord Melville. George Street, 'straight as an arrow flies', was the principal thoroughfare of the New Town, linking St. Andrew Square at its eastern end to Charlotte Square in the west. It was wider than sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
