Scope and Content St Andrew Square, Edinburgh 20th-century view of the north side St Andrew Square, the square at the eastern end of James Craig's New Town, became, by the late 18th century, one of the most popular and fashionable places in which to live. These four houses, designed in 1770-2 by Sir William Chambers, all have three-storeyed, five-bay fronts. The only difference between them was the position of the doorpiece. The house on the right shows its original rubble walling. In the late 18th century, lime mortar, or 'stucco' (from the Italian for plaster), was used to finish the frontages of houses. It was used to simulate stone, and applied over rubble. Later most of the stucco was stripped off to reveal the rubble walling. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
