Scope and Content Dundas House, St Andrew Square, Edinburgh Dundas House, occupying a prominent site on the east side of St Andrew Square, has been the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland since 1825. The house was built in 1774 for the wealthy Sir Laurence Dundas. Designed by Sir William Chambers, this fine Classical house has four giant Corinthian pilasters framing the windows on the first and second floors, an ornamental frieze below a cornice, and a central pediment rising above the roofline. Shortly after Dundas House was built, Sir Laurence lost his new home in a card game while playing for high stakes with a military crony, General John Scott. Sir Laurence was allowed to keep his home after agreeing to build General Scott another house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
