Scope and Content Glenlochar Bridge, near Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire This is a six-span masonry bridge, with segmental arches and rounded cutwaters, There are oculi in the spandrels above the cutwaters. This view shows the bridge from the south east. Note the level roadway, unusual in Galloway road bridges. The openings in the spandrels were designed to reduce the weight to be carried by the piers. It was a technique used in the late 18th century, abandoned by Thomas Telford in favour of longitudinal walls over the arch rings, giving hollow spandrels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
