Scope and Content View of dining room, Manor House, No 17 Boswall Road, Edinburgh Manor House is the central section of three linked villas, built c.1830. It was possibly designed by architect Thomas Hamilton (1784-1858). Pavilions were built to link the villas in the 1850s. Plans to turn the villas into flats in 1965 were abandoned. The dining room has a table which can be altered in size by the addition of 'leaves' of wood. Around this are 'balloon-back' and leather-upholstered chairs. This room houses a collection of etchings. An elaborate light-fitting hangs above the table. Dining rooms in Victorian times had to cater for both the family's everyday meals and the grand dinner parties given by the householder for large numbers of guests. Dining tables which could be expanded to seat varying numbers were a necessity. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
