Scope and Content Ferry pier, South Queensferry, West Lothian The use of the narrows at this point as a ferry crossing is linked to Queen Margaret of Scotland, wife of Malcolm Canmore, who used the route to reach Dunfermline. This ferry pier was built by John Rennie in about 1812. This view shows the ramped ferry pier, with its central to protect users from adverse winds. The pier remained in use, with alterations, for regular ferry services until the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964. The pier is now used for recreational purposes by private boaters, and by pleasure sailings to Inchcolm, and to the Sea Life Centre at North Queensferry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
